Complaint: City water official in Iowa faked tests for years

July 5, 2016

SIDNEY, Iowa (AP) — A city water official in southwest Iowa has been charged with falsifying records of daily tests for drinking water quality that did not happen.

Mark Travis, the public works director for Sidney, Iowa, is charged with felonious misconduct in office and falsifying required water quality information.

A criminal complaint says Travis sent the Iowa Department of Natural Resources false monthly reports indicating the water had been tested daily for chlorine and other substances as required. In reality, they were not.

The DNR uncovered the falsification after discovering data in the reports that seemed improbable. The alleged falsification lasted from 2009 to September 2015.

The city’s attorney says water quality was not an issue and it has hired an outside consultant to run its water supply, which serves about 1,100 customers.
