Third landslide found in past 3 years on Mississippi dam
BRANDON, Miss. (AP) — Part of an earthen dam that holds back one of Mississippi’s largest lakes is giving way.
WAPT-TV reports the landslide on the dam of the Ross Barnett Reservoir isn’t an immediate safety concern. Pearl River Valley Water Supply District General Manager John Sigman says the slippage is caused by wet weather as well as the weight of traffic from a roadway atop the dam. Officials are restricting vehicle weight on the busy roadway between Madison and Rankin counties.
The landslide is covered by a tarp and sandbags. Sigman says officials hope the wet earth will dry out and stabilize in coming months. It’s the third slide in the past three years.
Sigman says over the long term, the roadway should be moved from the dam to the flat area below.
