Lady ’Stangs 0-2 in Green Valley tourney
HENDERSON — As of Jan. 3 Needles’ Lady ’Stangs varsity basketball team was 0-2 in the seventh annual Gator Winter Classic tournament at Green Valley High School in Henderson.
Moapa Valley won the girls’ first game 50-31; Las Vegas’ Basic High School won their second 68-41.
“Things looked good for the first couple of minutes,” said Lady ’Stangs Coach Manuel Calderon of the first game. Needles jumped out to an early lead with Marie Mills, Riley Breaux and Paige Murch scoring in the first quarter.
“Then things went south real fast,” Calderon commented; with turnovers, missed shots and Moapa’s girls beating the Lady ’Stangs to the defensive end of the floor for easy transition baskets.
“We just couldn’t seem to stop the perimeter game of Moapa,” Calderon concluded of Game 1.
Moapa led 11-8 after one, 24-15 at the half, 38-22 after three quarters of play, with game-high scorer L. Cornwall (No. 12) putting up 25 points. Paige Murch led the Lady ’Stangs with 14.
Up by a narrow three points at the half, Basic’s size and outside shooting further complicated the Needles girls’ turnovers in Game 2, Calderon reported. Mills led Needles’ scoring in Game 2 with 14,, Murch and Valentina Limon added nine each.
The girls were to face Chugiak, out of Canada, today.
