Two Sought After High-speed Chase Through Area Communities
A driver and passenger are being sought after they eluded police during a high-speed pursuit across multiple communities on Interstate 495 on Tuesday afternoon.
Haverhill police initially attempted to stop the vehicle before the driver fled onto Interstate 495 southbound shortly before 1 p.m., according to a State Police press release.
The vehicle, a Chrysler, was targeted by police for an investigation into a previous crime, the release states.
State Police from Troop A and Troop C headquarters were involved in the pursuit. Police set down tire deflation devices, called “stop sticks,” at two locations prior to the pursuit.
To avoid the stop sticks, the driver turned into the median and entered the northbound side of Interstate 495. From there, the driver reversed direction and continued to flee, the release states.
According to the emergency radio broadcast, the driver reached speeds of nearly 100 mph at points as the vehicle passed through Westford, Chelmsford, Lowell and Tewksbury.
“The suspect vehicle soon entered Route 93 and was being operated in an extremely aggressive manner,” the release states. “Shortly thereafter, we terminated the pursuit in the interest of public safety.”
During the pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle made contact with two other vehicles.
“No injuries were reported from those crashes,” the release states.
Police are conducting a follow-up investigation to locate the occupants of the vehicle involved.
