Prep baseball: West Bend West wins WIAA summer baseball championship
West Bend West earned the 2017 WIAA state summer baseball championship with a 6-4 victory over Milwaukee Marquette on Saturday at Kapco Park in Mequon.
West Bend West (33-0) completed an undefeated season and won its fourth summer baseball title in 14 state appearances. The Spartans, Brookfield Central and Oak Creek have the most summer titles (four) since the WIAA began sponsoring summer baseball in 1965.
Marquette (27-8) finished as runner-up for the second consecutive season, after falling to Menomonee Falls in the title game last year.
The Hilltoppers scored in the bottom of the first inning, before West Bend West rallied with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Three consecutive walks, including two with the bases loaded, led to the Spartans’ two runs in the fifth.
Marquette scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, cutting its deficit to 5-4. But West Bend West added a run in the seventh on a run-scoring double by Anthony Schlass.
Evan Albrecht had three hits and Schlass collected two.
