Journalist Detained in Nigeria

February 10, 1989

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) _ Security agents of the military government detained the editor of a magazine that published an article on recent promotions in the armed forces, the publication said Friday.

Chris Okoli, editor of Newbreed news magazine, was picked up Tuesday, it said.

Security forces also visited the offices of the magazine and told its news editor and senior writer to report to police.

Nigeria’s government has pledged to respect press freedom, but it has detained journalists on several occasions for reporting on its future plans or about members of the military command or their families.
