Greenwich High students win prestigious state and national art awards
GREENWICH — Joining the ranks of past-winners Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates, 17 Greenwich High students were recognized for their exceptional art abilities by the prestigious national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program.
Greenwich High senior Elizabeth Burnett received a national silver key award for her art portfolio, one of about 100 students in the country to win that distinction.
“Lizzie’s National Silver Portfolio award is a visual essay and is comprised of images taken while the world is waking up at dawn,” said GHS art teacher Lynda Carroll. “The resultant images are like movie sets: single cars alone in a parking lot, an empty bench centered in a field under starlight, simple, pithy, brilliantly lit and elegant.”
Burnett also won a Connecticut State Scholastic gold key award for her portfolio. Her work is currently on display in the Galleria outside the Greenwich High Performing Art Center.
“She uses her images to express complex and universal topics,” said Carroll. “She is not afraid to take chances.”
Senior Emily Murphy collected a National Arts Education Association Best in Ceramics award, as well as a Connecticut State Scholastic gold key for her ceramics.
Senior Ryan McGinn, juniors Lucy Massam, Diana Khademi and Ben Rosenfeld, sophomores Hayley Duffy and Madison de Blasi and freshman Carl Cummings also won state gold key awards for their digital art, sculpture, photography or drawing and illustration work.
State silver keys were awarded to seniors Phoebe Brook, Elizabeth Grellier, Kaedie Calderon and Julia Moch and sophomore Rachel Korzendorfer for their digital art, photography or art portfolios.
In the categories of photography or drawing and illustration, juniors Jennifer Piotrzkowski and Zoe Metalios and sophomore Boris Ardemasov collected state-level honorable mentions.
Nearly 2,800 students from about 145 schools in Connecticut entered original works for consideration in the 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
