HS cross country: Highland boys girls reach state; Preston girls cruise

Highland qualified for next Saturday’s 5A state cross country meet after a third-place finish in Thursday’s 5A District 5-6 cross country meet. The Rams finished one point behind second-place Rigby and 35 points behind first-place Madison.

The Rams had three top-15 finishers, including Parker Johnson’s fifth-place finish. Highland’s Brenden Kilgore finished seventh, three seconds behind Johnson. Highland had five top-30 finishers at the meet.

“Our goal was to get top three and go to state,” Highland coach Jerry Powell said. “We are ecstatic. We accomplished our goal.”

Bonneville’s Coen Haroldsen ran a time of 16 minutes, 22.1 seconds to claim first place at the meet.

The Highland girls also finished third to qualify for next Saturday’s state meet.

The Rams’ Anna Sanford finished second, 19 seconds behind Madison’s Sara Lemon. Sanford, Jill Parry and Elana Sanford were the team’s top-10 finishers. Alyssa Jean Feltz finished 20th for the Rams.

“It is exciting,” Powell said. “We were hoping both teams would have the opportunity. Our girls ran really well.”

The 5A state meet is Oct. 29 at the Portneuf Wellness Complex.

4A DISTRICT 5-6 CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Skyline boys won the 4A District 5-6 cross country meet on Thursday at the Portneuf Wellness Complex to qualify for next Saturday’s state meet. Preston and Idaho Falls finished second and third, respectively, to round out the 4A boys state qualifiers.

Skyline’s Ryan Barna claimed the meet’s top spot with a time of 15 minutes, 58 seconds.

Pocatello’s Malachi Armstrong was the top boys local finisher, placing seventh. Blackfoot’s Derek Thomas and Derek Despain were the Broncos’ lone top-10 finishers, coming in eighth and ninth place, respectively. Preston’s Josh Harrison finished 10th to round out the top 10.

Blackfoot and Pocatello both had three top-20 finishers on Thursday.

Local teams Preston and Century finished one-two at Thursday’s 4A District 5-6 girls cross country meet to earn a trip to next Saturday’s state meet. Skyline finished two points behind the Diamondbacks to also qualify for state.

Blackfoot’s Michelle Pratt finished first with a time of 18:22, 46 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Virginia Nielson of Idaho Falls.

Preston was led by Billie Hatch and Ali Shumway, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Paige Shumway finished 10th overall for Preston.

Century’s Marissa Nelson was the D-backs’ top finisher, placing third while teammates Brook Chilton and Burkleigh Yost finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

“We are happy that we qualified and we’re just starting to look toward next week and focusing our thoughts on that,” Century coach Carly Flandro said.

Pocatello finished sixth, with Harlee Hales logging the team’s lone top-25 finish. Hales finished 23rd with a time of 21:29.

“It was a tough day for Poky, as far as qualifying on to state is concerned,” Pocatello coach Shannon Whitmer said. “But, we couldn’t be more proud of our athletes. They turned in some great times against great competition.”

The 4A state meet is Oct. 29 at the Portneuf Wellness Complex.
