Accidentally wounded officer crashes car and dies
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say an upstate New York police officer accidentally shot himself while driving to work, then crashed and died as he drove to the hospital.
Rochester Police Officer Manuel “Manny” Ortiz’s car crashed into a ravine in Penfield on Saturday evening.
On Monday, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said Ortiz had accidentally shot himself with his personal weapon, piercing his femoral artery.
Baxter says Ortiz called his fiance shortly before 7 p.m. to tell her he had shot himself and was heading to the hospital. He crashed shortly afterward.
The 52-year-old Ortiz was the car’s only occupant. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts by deputies to stop the bleeding with two tourniquets.
Baxter says the gunshot wound was the cause of death.
