Gilbert D. Schmidt, 81, Watertown, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Park Ridge in Watertown.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 27, at 11:30 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Todd Iverson officiating. Burial will take place at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown. Family and friends may gather at Hafemeister Funeral Home Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and at the church Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials, if desired, would be appreciated to the church.
Gilbert David Schmidt was born April 25, 1937, in Watertown, the son of Herman Carl and Alice (nee Rieck) Schmidt. He was a 1955 graduate of Lake Mills High School. On June 19, 1965, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Schutz at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was a hard-working dairy farmer and sold Dairyland Seed Corn. Gilbert was a lifelong member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown where he served as an usher. He enjoyed playing for the church’s dartball team. Gilbert loved the outdoors, especially gardening, fishing and deer hunting. He enjoyed puzzles and spending time with his family.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Schmidt; children, Cynthia (Rob) Gruenwald of Watertown, Ronald Schmidt of Watertown, Todd (Krista) Schmidt of Johnson Creek and Kimberly (Matt) Galston of Lowell; grandchildren, Kristina Gruenwald, Tyler Gruenwald, Jason Gruenwald, Jordan Nelson, Lexy Schneider, Preston Schmidt, Hayden Schmidt, Victoria Galston and Isabella Galston; sister, Eileen (Frank) Paulin-French as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Schmidt in infancy; brother-in-law, Jerome Paulin; and parents-in-law, Louis and Dora Schutz.
The family gives a sincere thank you to all their friends, family and various staff members at Marquardt Hospice for their kindness and compassion to Gilbert.
