Oakland women roll to easy victory in Horizon tournament opener
Detroit – Oakland was eager to play the first women’s basketball game in Little Caesars Arena history.
And the Golden Grizzlies made the appearance count, rolling past UIC, 80-46, in the Horizon League tournament opener Friday.
Junior Taylor Jones, the Horizon’s sixth player of the year, led Oakland with 20 points, and senior Cierra Bond scored 19. Senior Leah Somerfield had 11 rebounds.
Oakland led 22-11 after the first quarter and 36-17 at halftime, and never looked back in winning for the fourth time in five games, after losing five games in a row before that.
Senior Taylor Gleason added 14 points for the Golden Grizzlies, who won a Horizon League tournament game for the first time since joining the conference for the 2013-14 season.
Oakland (15-15), the seventh seed, plays No. 2 seed IUPUI at noon Saturday.
Junior Brittany Byrd led UIC (8-22) with 13 points.
