Stottlemyre dies at 77
Mel Stottlemyre made his mark on the mound: He started Game 7 of the World Series, earned five championship rings as a pitching coach, wound up with a plaque at Monument Park. But his most enduring impression might have come with the bat -- more than a half-century later, he remains the last pitcher to hit an inside-the-park grand slam. Stottlemyre, the ace who later oversaw stellar staffs for both the New York Yankees and Mets, has died. He was 77. The Yankees said Stottlemyre died Sunday. He had been living in the Seattle area and had multiple myeloma for nearly 20 years. A five-time All-Star and three-time 20-game winner, Stottlemyre went 164-139 with a 2.97 ERA in 11 seasons, all with the Yankees.
Pitt hires Whipple
Pittsburgh is turning to former Massachusetts head coach Mark Whipple to rejuvenate its offense. The Panthers hired Whipple as offensive coordinator on Monday. Whipple replaces Shawn Watson, who was fired earlier this month after the Panthers finished near the bottom of the Atlantic Coast Conference in nearly every major offensive category. Pitt finished 97th in the country in total offense, 93rd in scoring offense and 120th in passing offense. Whipple stepped down as head coach of the Minutemen last November after UMass went 4-8 in his fifth season.
Broncos bring in Munchak
A person with knowledge of the agreement says Mike Munchak, who had been a finalist for Denver’s head coaching job, is making a lateral move from the Pittsburgh Steelers to serve as the Broncos’ new offensive line coach. The person also said the Broncos are allowing Gary Kubiak to interview elsewhere and have received permission to interview 49ers QBs coach Rich Scangarello for their offensive coordinator opening.
Stars, Ducks make trade
The Dallas Stars acquired Andrew Cogliano from the Anaheim Ducks for Devin Shore in a swap of low-scoring veteran forwards on two frustrated teams.
