Grandfather pleads guilty to child molesting
MICHIGAN CITY – A 72-year-old grandfather pleaded guilty in a Michigan City courtroom Thursday to two of the 12 counts of child molesting he faced.
David Edward Allen, of Michigan City, admitted to digitally penetrating a 6-year-old girl in 2000 and 2001; and fondling a 7-year-old girl in 2016.
Respectively, the crimes are Class A and Level 4 felonies, and carry a maximum combined sentence of 62 years in prison.
In exchange for his guilty plea, the state is willing to dismiss the 10 remaining counts of child molesting – all Class A felonies that carry up to 500 collective years behind bars.
Judge Michael Bergerson took the plea agreement under advisement and ordered a presentence investigation to be completed, but he deemed a psychosexual evaluation unnecessary.
Allen’s Jan. 28 jury trial was canceled; and a sentencing hearing will be scheduled after a public defender has gone over the PSI with Allen, who is unable to read.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Allen engaged in sexual intercourse, oral sex, anal sex, digital penetration and fondling with five different children between September 2000 and November 2016.
The victims, four girls and a boy, ranged in age from 5 to 14 at the time of the incidents.
All five told police the abuse occurred inside Allen’s home on Sunnyside Drive.
Allen has remained in the La Porte County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond since his arrest in January.
