BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Aston Villa took a big step toward staying in the Premier League, routing Sunderland 6-1 Monday night behind Christian Benteke's second-half hat trick.

The Belgian scored in the 55th, 60th and 72nd minutes, giving him 27 goals in all competitions in his first season with the club.

Ron Vlaar, Andreas Weimann and Gabriel Agbonlahor also scored for Villa, while Danny Rose beat American goalkeeper Brad Guzan to tie score for Sunderland.

Villa (9-16-10) moved five points above Wigan (8-18-8) for the final relegation place and move ahead of Newcastle (10-18-7) on goal difference.
