Legionnaires’ disease reported at Rhode Island nursing home

September 21, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Health officials have confirmed three cases of Legionnaires’ disease at a Rhode Island nursing home.

The state Department of Health says the cases were diagnosed at the Summit Commons Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Providence between mid-August and early September.

Department spokesman Joseph Wendelken says he could not comment on the conditions of the patients.

Wendelken says the source of the disease is localized and not a risk to the wider public.

Symptoms of the disease are similar to the flu, and it is treatable with antibiotics.

Wendelken says older people, smokers and those with immune system deficiencies are more susceptible to the disease.

About 50 cases of Legionnaires’ were reported in the state last year.
