Big rally lifts LP baseball

La Porte overcame a 7-0 deficit to edge John Glenn 9-8 in eight innings in baseball Friday at Schreiber Field, winning on a bases-loaded walk to Josh Trim. LP (2-8) used a six-run fifth to get back in the game. Logan Schroeder was the winner, yielding one run on three hits over 4 1/3 nnings, while striking out five. Connor Stalbaum and Jackson Mrozinski helped to close out the game. Grant Collins, Brock Lipscomb and Gavin Zolvinski all had multiple hits for the error-less Slicers. Cooper Gean and Jack Vukovits both hit homers for Glenn (3-3), and Vukovits had three RBIs. Easton Stephens and Colin Stephens each collected three hits and both finished with RBIs.

Slicers girls tennis rolls

La Porte’s girls tennis team cruised 5-0 over visiting John Glenn on Friday.

Slicers softball loses at Bulldogs

La Porte’s softball team fell 15-3 in five innings at Crown Point on Thursday in a game rescheduled from Wednesday due to rain. Megan Reed and Morgan Keen each had RBIs for the Slicers, who scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning.

WT lashes LaCrosse softball

Washington Township handled LaCrosse 15-4 in five innings in a Porter County Conference softball game Friday. Kaylee Welkie had a run and an RBI for the Tigers, who managed just two hits off Katelyn Majda.

Hebron blanks Westville baseball

Westville managed just three hits in a 4-0 Porter County Conference baseball loss to Hebron on Friday. Jackson Nowatzke struck out seven and allowed five hits over six innings for the Blackhawks (3-2, 0-1).

Cougars girls tennis routs Clay

New Prairie’s girls tennis team blanked South Bend Clay 5-0 at home on Thursday. The Cougars’ Megan Boyd cruised 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles over Jeana Alberst, and at No. 2 singles, Anna Holvoet rolled 6-0, 6-0. Brianna Wilson won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and at No. 1 doubles, Sydney Moody and Emmy Kirkham cruised 6-0, 6-0. Hannah Pittman and Naomi Paprocki also won 6-0, 6-0. New Prairie’s JV rolled 11-1.

Harlan takes Wheeler VB job

Former Michigan City volleyball coach TR Harlan has been named to the same position at Wheeler.

Baseball games postponed

Friday’s South Central home baseball game with Morgan Township was not played due to field conditions. The game will be played at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Today’s Hobart at Michigan City game was postponed for the same reason. No make-up has been determined.

PNW hires Locke

Purdue University Northwest has announced the appointment of Courtney Locke as Head Women’s Basketball Coach.

Locke brings over 13 years of NCAA Division I experience as an assistant coach at Texas San Antonio, California Santa Barbara, Central Florida, Lipscomb and most recently the University of Hawaii, where she was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

Silvas wins, Marquette loses opener

Freshman Emily Silvas debuted with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Caroline Johnson in one singles play to highlight Marquette Catholic’s 4-1 loss to Crown Point in its girls tennis season opener Thursday at the Elston Courts.The Blazers’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Kassandra Loza and Nathaly Reynaga took Becca Ising and Gina Chiarella to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.

Blazers notch first softball win

Ally McConnell had two hits and drove in four runs and Summer Johnson allowed a solitary unearned run as Marquette (1-2) downed Lake Station 7-1 in softball Thursday at the Marquette Athletic Complex. Johnson retired 12 of the final 13 Eagles she faced and picked up an RBI single.

SC second in boys golf quad

Jackson Meloy and Sam Haschel shot 48s as South Central finished second in a boys golf quadrangular Thursday. John Glenn won with a 193, followed by the Satellites (203), Oregon-Davis (225) and LaCrosse (244).

2019-20 Slicer athletic physicals

The La Porte High School athletic department is now scheduling appointments for athletic physicals for the 2019-20 school year for athletes that are presently in grades 8-11. Physicals will be conducted on May 9 from 5-8 p.m. in the main gym at La Porte High School at a cost of $20. Blazers athletic schedule changes

Marquette Catholic’s girls tennis match last Thursday at Hammond Academy of Science & Technology was postponed due to rain. It’s been rescheduled for April 29 at 4:30 p.m. The Blazers’ girls tennis match at Andrean originally set for last Tuesday and moved to last Friday has now been moved to April 26 at 4:30 p.m. Also, due to transportation issues, North Judson was forced to postpone a girls tennis match with Marquette on Wednesday. A make-up date for the match hasn’t been announced yet. Marquette’s softball team postponed its doubleheader at Hammond last Saturday due to roster restrictions. A make-up date wasn’t yet known. Marquette’s baseball game scheduled for this past Monday against John Glenn will now be played on May 17 at 4:30 p.m. at John Glenn. Marquette has also added a baseball game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Culver Military Academies.
