Pat Roberts of Kansas won’t run for re-election
Sen. Pat Roberts announced Friday he won’t seek re-election in 2020, already giving Republicans a second vacancy to defend.
Mr. Roberts, 82, said he will serve out his term, vowing to “sprint to the finish.”
He joins Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, who late last year announced he, too, would forgo re-election.
Senate Democrats’ campaign arm salivated over the openings.
“The latest GOP retirement is an early and ominous warning to vulnerable Senate Republicans who will have to answer to voters this cycle,” said David Bergstein, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
While a GOP state at the national level, Kansas did elect a Democratic governor last year, as well as flip a House seat.
