Radio Shack to Sell AST, Packard Bell Computers
NEW YORK (AP) _ Radio Shack, the nation’s largest electronics retailer, will sell personal computers made by AST Research Inc. and Packard Bell Electronics Inc., the companies announced Monday.
Radio Shack, a 6,500-store chain owned by Fort Worth, Texas-based Tandy Corp., has been gradually shifting its PC inventory to name-brand machines from its store brand.
AST last year acquired Tandy’s computer manufacturing operations and has since manufactured some machines under that label.
About 4,000 of the chain’s stores will carry AST’s Advantage line. The stores will also carry a notebook computer made by Packard Bell.
Radio Shack already sells IBM personal computers.
