Ohio teen, 13, accused of shooting death of 14-year-old

CINCINNATI, Ohio — A 13-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after he was accused of the shooting death of 14-year-old.

Surrell Gaines was killed in Cincinnati’s Mount Auburn neighborhood on July 30, according to Fox 19.

Reports say the 13-year-old suspect might have been playing with a shotgun when it went off.

“We are still trying to put the pieces together,” police spokesman Lt. Steve Saunders tells Fox 19.

The boy has been charged with reckless homicide, having weapons under disability and tampering with evidence, WLWT Channel 5 reports.

WLWT reports the suspect might be connected with a deadly shooting during a burglary committed when he was 12.

The father of the victim tells WCPO Channel 9 he had hoped Gaines would go to college, but his mother said the boy had begun spending time with a “dangerous” crowd.

“I told him what I saw coming and he didn’t listen, so this is the result of not listening,” the mother, Tammy Smith, tells WCPO.
