WBS PENS: Two Sams Too Much For Milwaukee

February 9, 2019

When it came to ending their two-game offensive slump, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins looked to their two Sams — Lafferty and Miletic. Lafferty scored twice on the power play in the first period and Miletic added a shorthanded goal in the second as the Penguins beat the Milwaukee Admirals, 5-2, at UW-Milwaukee Panther Area on Friday night. Called up Wednesday from Wheeling, John Muse started in net and made 32 saves as the Penguins improved to 24-20-4-1. Turning point A dominant first period saw the Penguins blitz the Admirals for three goals. After Lafferty opened the scoring at 5:22, Ethan Prow sent a puck flying high into the air through the neutral zone and onto the stick of Joseph Cramarossa. The latter’s drive to the net was stopped by Troy Grosenick, but Jimmy Hayes was right behind to knock in the loose rebound at 10:13. Lafferty added his second on a nice backhand, and Milwaukee was never in contention the rest of the way. Three stars • Muse picked up his third AHL win this season and has a save percentage of .934. He was the third star. • Anthony Richard had one of the lone highlights for Milwaukee with a goal in the second period and was the No. 2 star. • Lafferty’s multigoal game was the first of his career, and his two points were his first since Dec. 29. He was the No. 1 star. Stat to know The Penguins defense has tightened up in a big way and allowed two goals or fewer in six of the team’s last seven games. Pens notes Jean-Sebastien Dea returned to the lineup after serving his two-game suspension. ... Forward Ben Sexton, returning from an injury, was also in the lineup for the first time since Jan. 5. ... The Penguins made a trade early Friday, acquiring forward Trevor Yates from the Grand Rapids Griffins for future considerations. Yates was immediately assigned to Wheeling.
