Bruce Museum showcases work of Milton Avery and family
GREENWICH — The new exhibition “Summer with the Averys” showcases the work of Milton Avery, his wife Sally Michel, and their daughter, March Avery at the Bruce Museum.
The Avery family would spend their summer at artists’ residences and come back with sketchbooks full of ideas upon which to expand. The work on display features earth scenes and figural compositions as well as rarely-seen travel sketchbooks.
Milton Avery’s work is often compared to that of Henri Matisse and is seen as momentus in the scope of representational American abstract painting. The oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints the family produced show the splendor of natural phenomena and heavy influence of family and friends in their lives.
