French Olympic delegation celebrates 2024 Games victory
PARIS (AP) — Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo waved a flag Friday and her plane was sprayed by a celebratory water cannon as the French Olympic delegation was welcomed back in Paris after securing the 2024 Olympic Games.
Hidalgo noted the seriousness of the undertaking for Paris, which has been targeted by extremist attacks. She said she trusts "our police and security forces to help us make these games a celebration."
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Evaluating Los Angeles' readiness to host the 2024 Olympic Games takes some imagination. That's because a lot of the pitch still relies on images on a computer screen, or a blueprint of what's to come on a dusty construction site.
PARIS (AP) — More than a million Facebook users like the idea of hosting the 2024 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Many of them, oddly enough, from Pakistan.
A report prepared for The Associated Press says most of LA's likes have come in the past six weeks from far away from Southern California.
France confident of hosting Rugby World Cup and Olympics
PARIS (AP) — France has the capacity to stage the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games, according to French Rugby Federation president Bernard Laporte.
France is up against Ireland and South Africa for the 2023 hosting rights. The host will be selected in November.
French PM pledges 1 billion euros to Paris 2024 bid
LE BOURGET, France (AP) — French Prime Minister Manuel Valls pledged one billion euros ($1.1 billion) of support from the government for Paris' bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
In a country often rocked by social conflicts and strikes, Paris bid leaders also announced on Friday they struck a deal with France's five main trade unions. Paris bid leaders said the "social pact" sealed with the trade unions will guarantee a "smooth and effective games-time operation" and benefit jobs creation.
Consider it the Brazil primary. Or the Rio caucus.
When the Olympic Games open in Rio de Janeiro next month, more than 10,000 athletes from 206 countries will be joined by members of bid committees from Los Angeles, Paris, Rome and Budapest. For them, the Games are the first major step in campaigns aimed at winning a different golden prize in another South American city 15 months from now - the right to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
