Girls cross country: 2018 Rochester previews

August 29, 2018

CENTURY PANTHERS

Head coach: Joey Keillor

Assistants: Janet Topazian, Bobby Miller, Brent McGrew, Jess Christy, Jenny Guibert

Last season: Big Nine Conference champions, 3rd in Section 1AA (10 points out of a state-meet berth)

Top returners: Sr. Helen Li, Jr. Ava Nuttall, Sr. Kaitlin Miller, Fr. Kennedy Speer.

Outlook: Century has high hopes this season after narrowly missing a trip to the Class AA state meet last season as a team. Senior Helen Li qualified as an individual after placing fifth in the Section 1AA meet. The Panthers also lost one of the best runners they’ve had in recent seasons, as Aly Welch graduated after a 12th-place finish at state. Century hopes to reload, though, as it returns five of its seven runners who ran in the section meet.

Coach says: “We had record numbers of girls showing up to summer captains practices, and, in general, we run a lot and we have a lot of really strong girls. Diversity is another strength, with girls who do a wide variety of other sports in respective seasons. Each girl (and coach) brings a lot to the table, and we try to make the most of the diverse talents we have. While one can never afford an ounce of complacency in the Big 9, other teams have their work cut out to beat us. In the Section 1AA, we face two or more of the top 10 teams in the state with the Lakevilles and Farmington.”

Outlook: Halverson and Freed are back as JM’s top two runners. They were the team’s top finishers at the section meet last season. Coach Davick said the Rockets have some depth, and there will be good competition for the Nos. 4-7 spots in the varsity lineup on a weekly basis. Newcomer Maggie Anderson, a senior, has looked strong in preseason workouts, as has junior Alexa Hoyme.

Coach says: “Many of our athletes put in the miles this summer and seem to be reaping the benefits as evidenced by our time trial (last week). Some are running end-of-the-season times from last year already.”
