Minicozzi Memorial 5K Run/1-Mile Walk To Benefit Local Youth
This week, staff writer Laura Rysz talks with Leslie Minicozzi Galacci about the seventh annual Capt. James R. Minicozzi Memorial 5K Run/1-Mile Walk Race .
Residence: South Abington Twp.
Professional background: Co-owner of Alfredo’s Café
Q: Tell us about the lateCapt. James R. Minicozzi.
A: My brother loved helping people in need. He was in the Army, active duty in the Army National Guard and a member of the La Festa Italiana board of directors, UNICO, Gino J. Merli Veterans’ Center, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania and American Cancer Society and was Pennsylvanians for Human Life board of directors chairman. He was devoted to his family, community, country and church. One of Jimmy’s favorite times of the year was the volunteer work he did with UNICO at La Festa.
Q: What is new this year with the race in his honor?
A: This is the first year we will have live video results airing on the internet during the race. Photos will be posted on our Facebook page. Excitingly, my brother’s West Scranton High School class of 1993 is celebrating its 25th-year high school reunion, and they are trying to organize fellow classmates to participate, as a group, in the event to honor him.
Q: What is included with participation?
A: The first 100 participants are guaranteed a T-shirt, tote and sport bottle for their $20 donation. Participants also can enjoy complimentary water and fruit at the registration table before and after the race. Many awards will be presented. There also is an award presented to an active or veteran armed services member who participates. Prizes include mini getaways, various gift certificates for dinner, gym memberships, gift baskets and ski lift passes.
Q: How much money have you raised so far in the past six years?
A: We have donated close to $50,000 to two beneficiaries. Our major beneficiary is the Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPA for its children’s annual Christmas party, and the past two years we were fortunate enough to be able to raise enough proceeds to extend to West Scranton High School and award two high school seniors from the graduating class with scholarships.
