Prep boys basketball: L-Cats pound Pumas; Falcons rout CWC, Trojans, Pirates fall
LAKE MILLS — Sophomore Adam Moen and junior Matt Johnson scored 18 points apiece as the Lake Mills boys basketball team routed visiting Poynette 89-51 in a Capitol North Conference game on Friday for the team’s sixth win in seven games.
Sophomore Charlie Bender scored 13 points and junior Mike Herrington totaled 12 for the L-Cats (13-4, 5-1 in conference).
Lake Mills made 11 3-pointers, including four by Johnson and three by senior guard JT Toepfer, in the victory despite not being able to practice during the week due to the weather.
“I felt like the guys were ready to play which was good to see after an untraditional week that we didn’t get to practice,” Lake Mills head coach Steve Hicklin said. “When you share the ball and make the defense work we can generate layups and threes. That’s when we are at our best. It was a result of moving the ball and sharing it. When we do that we have the potential to score a lot of points.”
Moen was being guarded by a bigger defender and used his quickness to take advantage by driving to the hoop.
“He did a nice job of getting to the basket,” Hicklin said. “He was being guarded by their big post player and was able to use his athletic ability to exploit them on the perimeter a little bit.”
JT Toepfer scored 11 points and sophomore Drew Stoddard had eight for the L-Cats.
Lake Mills remains tied with Lakeside Lutheran atop the Capitol North standings, one game ahead of Luther Prep.
For Poynette (3-11, 0-6), Garrett Bruchs scored a game-high 22 points and Nik Feller finished with nine.
Lake Mills travels to take on Lakeside Lutheran Thursday.
