Happier holidays HAPPIER HOLIDAYS
As the weather gets chillier and Houston-area residents recover from their Thanksgiving celebrations, the area’s local senior living communities are getting ready with a variety of celebrations and events to mark the holiday season.
The Abbey at Westminster Plaza, like in years past, is hosting a Christmas party with heavy hors d’oeuvres and hot wassail, or mulled cider. Residents will also be able to visit the party’s Candy Buffet to make a goody bag to take with them as their party favor. Entertainment will be a set of Christmas carolers in Victorian attire.
“At the party, we will also collect toys for Operation Stocking Stuffer and take the collection to the fire station afterward,” said Rhonda Dixon, social director, The Abbey at Westminster Plaza.
Treemont Retirement Community’s new activity director, Monica Muniz, has been hard at work planning holiday activities for the community for the month of December, including a menorah lighting to celebrate the eight days of Hanukkah, and a resident Christmas celebration, which was held Dec. 8.
The community also hosts carolers from Kinkaid, Kataolla, Phi Mu Alpha, Cornerstone Academy, Berry Elementary, Girl Scouts, Village School, and many more, as well as a Christmas shopping market, which was held Dec. 15. Residents also made a trip to see the Christmas Lights in River Oaks and Pecan Grove on Dec. 20. And just around the corner, residents will ring in 2019 with a New Year’s Eve celebration on Dec. 31, which will feature a performance from the Mark Prause Trio. Treemont’s residents have been busy making their own ornaments, having a door decorating contest and attending socials, Muniz said.
“There is no shortage of energy and enthusiasm at Treemont during the holidays, and we hope there is a bit of cheer and enjoyment for all of our residents with the varied events during December,” Muniz said. “Residents retain their past holiday memories but are excited as they make late-life friendships and create new holiday memories as Treemont soon feels like home.”
