Two arrested after slow-speed chase in Escondido

Two men were arrested in Escondido following a slow-speed pursuit with law enforcement Monday afternoon.

According to Escondido Police Lt. Scott Walters, a dark green 1997 Honda rolled through a stop light at the intersection of North Ash Street and East Washington Avenue around noon. A 25-year-old male was driving the vehicle and a 23-year-old male was in the passenger seat.

Police attempted to stop the car, but the suspects fled and officers pursued the vehicle for about one minute before discontinuing the chase.

“All we had was the rolled stop light,” Walters said. “We weren’t going to get in a dangerous pursuit because of just that.”

The suspects drove the car onto the lawn of a home on the 2000 block of Minneola Lane, just north or El Norte Parkway, and abandoned the vehicle. Walters said residents nearby assisted officers with locating the suspects. A perimeter was set and the men were eventually taken into custody less than a mile from the abandoned vehicle around 12:41 p.m.

The 25-year-old driver was arrested on the corner of East Washington Avenue and Hayward Place. The 23-year-old was arrested around the same time at the intersection of Pummelo Court and Star Ruby Court.

Walters said police are not yet releasing the name of the men in custody.
