Police: Hillsboro teen dead in pool after swim practice
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — A teenager was found dead in a swimming pool after a swim practice in Hillsboro, police said Thursday.
Nabila Maazouz, 14, was pronounced dead late Wednesday after being discovered in the pool at Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center, where her swim team had just finished a practice, said Sgt. Eric Bunday.
Maazouz was a freshman at the Oregon Episcopal School and a member of the Liberty High School swim team, he said.
The team finished its practice and had pulled the cover over the pool before anyone noticed Maazouz was missing, Bunday said.
She was spotted about 30 minutes in the pool a search of the facility.
Lifeguards and paramedics were not able to resuscitate her.
Authorities still haven’t determined if Maazouz drowned before or after the pool cover was put on the pool, he said.
Others remember her participating in the practice, he said, so it appears she died after it was over.
“We can’t definitively say whether the cover was pulled over her while she was still in the pool or whether she went back after the fact” to get something and drowned, he said.
