Another stretch of U.S. 290 reopens
A new section of entrances, exits and main lanes opened on U.S. 290 Monday, a significant step in a seven-year revamp of the freeway.
The four-mile completed section is now open between West Little York and Pinemont, TxDOT said. There now are five inbound lanes from West Little York to Loop 610, one of the most congested areas in the county.
Much of that section of U.S. 290 was closed over the weekend so crews could complete the traffic switch. Other major sections of the freeway opened last month.
The project is one of 13 widening sections of U.S. 290 from Loop 610 to Waller County. The 38-mile construction zone has frustrated drivers, who brave bumper-to-bumper traffic on a shoulderless freeway through northwest Harris County. When completed, the freeway will have four lanes in each direction from Loop 610 to the Grand Parkway.
TxDOT plans to finish all of the projects by the end of the year. Before that happen, several more road closures are planned, including the Loop 610 north exit to U.S. 290 west overnight Monday through Wednesday; the U.S. 290 eastbound ramp to West Tidwell from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; and the U.S. 290 eastbound ramp from Fairbanks North Houston from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
