7th annual HSS Greenwich Cup Half Marathon Duka, Small win marathon
A big test of endurance was held in Greenwich on Sunday morning, as 751 runners competed in the seventh annual HSS Greenwich Cup Half Marathon.
The 13.1-mile marathon had the athletes run around Greenwich Point and through neighborhoods in Old Greenwich and Riverside.
Milan Duka, 25, of Stamford was the marathon’s overall winner, finishing the race in 1 hour, 14 minutes, 26 seconds. Timothy Moylan, a 36-year old from Wilton, was the runner-up in 1:19.02.
Joe Swift (41, Fairfield) placed third in 1:19.08, followed by Matthew Kupersmith (New Canaan, 1:21.49). Timothy Doherty (White Plains, N.Y.,), Christine Small, 41, of Old Greenwich placed sixth in 1:24.22. Leo Biala (41, Stamford, 1:25.16), Ian Schwartz (28, Stamford, 1:25.31), Gene Lee, 45, of Cos Cob placed ninth in 1:25.35 and Greenwich’s Peter Kapp (15, 1:25.43) was 10th.
Small was the women’s champion and Hala Si-Ahmed of Greenwich was second in the women’s division (1:32.20). Katherine Grambling from Darien was the third women’s finisher (1:34.38).
In the men’s 19-under division, Kapp had the top time (1:25.43), followed by George Bednar of Greenwich (1:34.14) and Matteo Chiesara from Greenwich (1:42.38).
Rachel Bellissimo of Riverside took top honors in the women’s 19-under division (1:45.53). Francoise Hultin from Fairfield was second (1:46.48) and Grace Rankin of Fairfield took third (1:48.02).
In the women’s 20-29 year-old division, Kate Mohr of Greenwich had the best time (1:34.46). Hannah Farr (New York, N.Y.) was second in the division (1:35.16), followed by Caroline Winslow of Wilton (1:37.59).
Duka was first in the men’s 20-29 year-old group (1:14.27) and Ian Schwartz, also of Stamford, had the second-best time (1:25.38), followed by Jack Campbell (Fairfield, 1:29.31).
In the men’s 30-39 division, Moylan of Wilton posted the best time (1:19.03) and Kupersmith of New Canaan registered a time of 1:21.49. Will Reagan of Fairfield had the third-best time in the division (1:26.06).
Si-Ahmed was the 30-39 women’s winner, with Grambling taking second and Janine Tedesco of White Plains, N.Y., finishing third in the division (1:36.35). Small was also the women’s 40-49 year-old champion, while Vail Weymann of Darien was second (1:34.43) and Allie Mannle finished third (1:35.38).
Swift had the top time in the men’s 40-49 group, with Doherty placing second and Biala taking third. The men’s 50-59 year-old division saw Jim Thompson of Trumbull post a first-place time of 1:27.26, while Yasu Shibata (White Plains) was second (1:27.59) and Randy Bitonte (Houston, Texas, 1:30.30) took third.
Tracy Lawrence-Black from West Harrison, N.Y., was the top finisher in the women’s 50-59 division (1:47.46), while Nina Auerbach (Chappaqua, N.Y.) had the second best time (1:51.46). Lisa Bergtraum (New York, N.Y.) was third (1:52.54).
Norwalk’s Andrea Williamson earned first-place honors in the women’s 60-69 division (2:04.24) and Courtney Lee of Old Greenwich was second (2:06.00) and George Behringer of Norwalk finished third (2:08.07).
Robert Albanese (Purchase, N.Y.) registered the best time in the men’s 60-69 year-old division (1:41.28). Mitchell Bernstein (New Rochelle, N.Y., 1:43.23) and Stephen McCulloch (Ossining, N.Y.) were second and third, respectively.
