Week 13 Pro Picks winner: Jeremiah F. Burke

The Herald-Argus Pro Picks contest winner for Week 13 of the National Football League was Jeremiah F. Burke, of La Porte. He was the only person in our contest to earn a 12-3 record. Burke won the $50 prize.

Slicers boys basketball to play at Indiana Wesleyan

La Porte’s JV & varsity boys basketball teams will play in the IWU Shootout at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion on Dec. 28. For the varsity, the Slicers face Twin Lakes in the opener of Session 1 at 8 a.m. South Bend St. Joseph meets Logansport in Game 2 at about 9:45 a.m. In the second session later that day, Twin Lakes plays St. Joseph at 1 p.m., and La Porte meets Logansport at roughly 2:45 p.m.

For the JV, South Bend St. Joseph faces Logansport in Game 1 of Session 1 at 8 a.m., and the Slicers play Twin Lakes in the second contest at about 9:45 a.m. In Session 2 later that day, La Porte meets the Berries in the opener at 1 p.m., and Twin Lakes and St. Joe face off in the last game of the JV event at roughly 2:45 p.m. Times listed are CST. Tickets are now on sale in the La Porte High School athletic office for $14 for the entire day. Session tickets will be available at the gate for $8, or $15 for the whole day. LPHS will only be selling the $14 all-day tickets.

Cougars-Slicers boys hoops moved to Dec. 22

The New Prairie at La Porte JV & varsity boys basketball games originally scheduled for last Saturday night will now be played on Saturday, Dec. 22, at 5 p.m. at Slicer Gym.

LP boys swimmers down Portage

La Porte’s boys swim team beat Portage 93-69 at home Tuesday night. The Slicers’ Graham Siefker won both the 100-yard freestyle (52.77) and 100 backstroke (59.51), and Jordan Hull earned first in the 200 individual medley (2:23.02). La Porte’s 200 free relay team of Hunter Moffitt, Prestin Butcher, Lucas Banic, and Nestor Valero-Fuertes took first, and its 400 free relay team of Siefker, Kreg Warner, Moffitt, and Hull claimed first.

Slicers girls swimmers fall

La Porte’s girls swim team lost 98-77 to Portage at home Tuesday night. The Slicers’ Abigail Roberts captured first in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 free, and Becca Shaffer won the 200 individual medley as well as the 100 butterfly. Lexi Burns placed first in diving, and La Porte’s 200 free relay team of Shaffer, Jimena Torres, Loralei Mareska, and Roberts took first.

Blazers Kenney earns IBCA/Subway honor

Marquette guard Colin Kenney has been named the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA)/Subway District 1 Player of the Week after scoring 71 total points in Blazers’ wins over Crete-Monee and South Bend St. Joseph. The Furman commit scored 29 points on 10-for-18 shooting, including 5-of-9 beyond the arc, in a 69-66 victory against Crete-Monee, adding four assists and five rebounds. Kenney matched his career-high with 42 points to lead Marquette past St. Joseph 80-73, making 16-of-28 shots, 3-of-7 3-pointers and 7-of-8 free throws. He also picked up five steals and three boards. This is the third time Kenney has been honored by the IBCA. Classmate Sophia Nolan was among the District 1 girls nominees.

City boys host Washington Twp.

Michigan City’s boys basketball team will host Class A No. 10 Washington Township on Saturday. The junior varsity contest is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
