Youngstown St. 24, Northwestern St. 14

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) _ Jake Smallfield caught touchdown passes in the first and fourth quarters Saturday as Youngstown State beat Northwestern State 24-14 at Stambaugh Stadium.

Demond Tidwell threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Smallfield with 10:54 left in the first quarter to cap a five-play, 46-yard drive to put the Penguins ahead 7-0.

Small also caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jared Zwick with 7:23 left to play as Youngstown State (6-2) expanded its 17-14 lead to 24-14 over Northwestern State (4-3). The 16-play, 80-yard drive took more than 7 1/2 minutes off the clock.

In the second quarter, Youngstown State’s Mark Griffith kicked a 42-yard field goal with 11:53 left and Jermaine Brown scored on a 1-yard run with 5:24 left in the first half to cap a 10-play, 74-yard drive and put the Penguins ahead 17-0 at halftime.

Warren Patterson threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Pat Palmer with 7:54 left in the third quarter for Northwestern State.

The visitors also scored on an 8-yard touchdown run by Taylor Williams with 14:56 left in the fourth quarter to cap an eight-play, 94-yard drive.
