Man Who Had Been on Heart-Assist Device Gets Transplant With PM-Artificial Heart, Bjt
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ A 35-year-old man kept alive since Tuesday by a mechanical pump that helped his heart beat underwent a heart transplant operation early today.
Allen Peplinski of Dodge, Neb., was listed in critical but stable condition at the Milwaukee County Medical Complex after the four-hour operation by a Medical College of Wisconsin heart transplant team.
Doctors went to St. Louis Friday night to get the donor heart, which came from a 20-year-old Missouri man, said Jeanne Arnold, a spokeswoman for the medical center.
She said Peplinski had been kept alive by a ventricular assist device, which essentially beat his own heart for him.
″It’s a relatively new procedure to use in a patient who is in end state cardiomyopathy and waiting for a donor,″ she said.
Cardiomyopathy causes the heart to pump insufficient blood, doctors said.
