This photo gallery highlights some of the top news images made by Associated Press photographers in Latin America and the Caribbean that were published in the past week.

Political confrontation continued in Venezuela, with embattled President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido campaigning to keep up support from their backers amid the country’s economic crisis.

Venezuela’s government kept its borders with Colombia and Brazil closed to prevent the opposition from bringing in humanitarian aid donated by the United States and other nations that support Guaido, forcing Venezuelan children to raft across a border river to reach schools in Cucuta, Colombia.

Crowds of Brazilians and visitors filled the streets for raucous and colorful celebrations of Carnival.

Haitians also took time for their own Carnival festivities despite continuing political unrest aimed at the government of President Jovenal Moise.

Honduran police burned a large cache of confiscated drugs.

On Mexico’s northern frontier, teenage migrants from Central America struggled to get by while they dreamed of somehow getting to the U.S. side of the border and building new lives.
