American Licorice receives national recognition
La PORTE — A La Porte company has been named as one of the “Best and Brightest” companies to work in the nation.
American Licorice Company, which makes Sour Punch Straws and Red Vines Candy, was selected as one of 2018’s national winners for the title.
This designation comes from the National Association for Business Resources for Employee Relations and Innovation (NABR). The award recognizes “excellence in employee relations, innovation to motivate employees and the ability to effectively implement creative compensation programs.”
”I believe ALC is one of the best places to work because leadership genuinely cares for the well-being of the team and the local community,” said Senior Plant Operations Manager, Josh Griffin. “This has a great impact on me as I live in La Porte. The team is provided opportunities to not only change their lives for the better, but also have a positive impact on other members of the community.”
Griffin said these opportunities come from tuition reimbursement, local charitable and volunteer events, CPT classes at Ivy Tech or apprentice positions.
“I started as a temporary worker and have progressively been promoted to Plant Manager utilizing the opportunities given,” Griffin said. “Another great part of working at ALC is the family/owners are working with you to accomplish corporate objectives as well as your personal goals. Lastly, we have an incredible team who’s very supportive creating a family-like atmosphere.”
American Licorice Company has been family owned and operated since it was founded in 1914. As one of the original licorice manufacturers in the United States, and one of the oldest candy companies in the industry, they have maintained a standard of workplace excellence by offering employees community-driven work experience.

The 2018 national winning companies were judged by an independent research firm which reviewed numerous key measures relative to other nationally designated recipients of the award.
Qualifying companies will be recognized at the National Best and Brightest Summit-Illuminate 2019 symposium and awards gala of Sept. 15 to 17 at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel.
