LOCAL WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Davis, Hoffman Medal At Wilkes Open
Two of the area’s top wrestling products in recent years made a pit stop in Wilkes-Barre.
Like they used to in their high school and prep school careers, Jimmy Hoffman and Jack Davis had their hands raised often Saturday.
2017 Hazleton Area graduate Hoffman and 2018 Wyoming Seminary grad Davis, of Hanover Twp., both earned medals at the 86th annual Wilkes Open. Hoffman was the 149-pound runner-up, and Davis took fourth place at 133 pounds.
A redshirt freshman, Hoffman was one of Lehigh’s unattached wrestlers in the tournament. He won by tech fall twice and added a pin before losing in the finals to teammate and fifth-year senior Cort Schuyler.
Davis, a Penn State freshman also wrestling unattached, earned a pin and dominant 21-3 tech fall before dropping his last two matches of the day.
Before moving on to college, Davis was a two-time prep national champion with Sem, among other accolades. Hoffman finished second in the PIAA in his final two seasons with Hazleton Area.
On Saturday, they weren’t the only local wrestlers with a successful Wilkes Open. Wyoming Seminary also entered seven wrestlers and finished sixth with four medalists in a tournament mostly represented by colleges.
Sem senior Ramazan Attasaouv won the 133-pound title, defeating Davis by decision in the process. Senior Austin Cooley (197 pounds), senior Justin Hoyle (133) and sophomore Zeke Escalera (125) were all fifth-place finishers for the Blue Knights.
Tournament host Wilkes took 11th on the team leaderboard. Though no Colonels left with a medal, Brock Horton (133), Kyle Medrow (141), Coughlin graduate Joshua Brown (149), John Ritter (157) and Austin Cominsky (197) were all quarterfinalists.
