Heard on the Street: Prairie Walls to call it quits
After 20 years, Rochester’s Prairie Walls climbing gym is closing its doors.
Prairie Walls, which Dave Brandt launched in 1998, has announced that it will close its 10,000-square-foot facility at 4420 19th St. NW for good on Sunday.
The gym sent out word of the closing to its members earlier this month.
Jay Maier purchased the business in 2015, though Brandt stayed on as an employee.
For many years, Prairie Walls was a hot spot as Rochester’s sole climbing gym as the sport of wall climbing grew in popularity. It features a bouldering room and dedicated children’s walls as well as many other offerings.
In December 2015, a second Rochester facility was opened by Jeremy and Karen Schaar at 6071 Rome Circle NW, which overlooks U.S. Highway 52.
Roca Climbing and Fitness offers more than 16,000 square feet of climbing areas.
If the chatter on the street is correct, another Rochester fitness studio may be throwing in the towel soon.
I should have more info on this tip soon.
