1 dead in morning house fire
A person died in a house fire on Fort Wayne’s near west side just after midnight Thursday, fire officials said.
Neighbors a block away called 911 at 12:11 a.m., about a rapidly spreading fire at 2337 Elyetta St., a statement from the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.
Crews arrived 3 minutes later and found the one-story home fully engulfed in flames.
Because of the intensity of the fire, power lines fell causing portions of the home to be energized, the statement said. There were numerous small explosions inside the home.
Firefighters worked to keep the flames from spreading to neighboring homes.
It took crews 33 minutes to get the fire under control.
After American Electric Power cut power to the home, firefighters were able to search for victims.
A victim was found about an hour later, the statement said.
The identity of the victim will be made by the Allen County Coroner.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
