Holiday hullabaloo in Lead and Deadwood
LEAD-DEADWOOD — Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s brining Christmas cheer to the Black Hills.
To help celebrate the season, the holly, jolly towns of Lead and Deadwood will be hosting a few family-friendly festivities, listed below.
Festival of Trees: Nov. 28-29
Come and see the festive flora, decked out for the holiday season. There will be a preview night from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Historic Homestake Opera house, were families can come and take free photos with Santa, enjoy cookies and entertainment, and tour the theater showcasing the trees and wreaths. Silent and live auctions will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday where attendees will be able to bid on the trees and wreaths and other items, as well as vote for the People’s Choice for Best Tree and Wreath. Deadwood community holiday celebration: Nov. 30
This event begins at 5 p.m. at Mustang Sally’s and the Fairmont Hotel. Activities include holiday food and drink, carolers, ornament making for the kids, tree lighting, bonfire, s’mores and more, including visits with Santa and gifts for the kids. Celebrate the season at this free, family-friendly event. All are welcome. The Christmas tree lighting will take place at 5:15 p.m. and Santa will arrive at 5:30 p.m. For the event, the Mineral Palace will offer free parking in its Main Street lot, across from its main entrance.
Festive Fridays: Nov. 30-Dec. 14
Kids in grades K-6 are invited to enjoy three unique holiday themed programs at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center from 6-8 p.m. Partygoers will hear stories, play games, make festive ornaments, and enjoy refreshments. Deadwood History Annual Holiday Open House: Dec. 1
Deadwood History Inc. invites the community to their annual Holiday Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Days of ’76 Museum. There will be free admission to the museum as well as holiday craft stations, family photos with Santa, and refreshments. For more information call 722-4800.
Lead-Deadwood Schools Christmas Shows: Dec. 3 and 6
The Lead-Deadwood Middle and High School Band concert will take place at 7 p.m. on Dec. 3 in the High School. The Elementary School will be putting on their holiday concert starting with the first and second graders taking the stage at 5 p.m. on Dec. 6. There will be an hour intermission at 5:30 p.m. with a hot dog feed sponsored by the Deadwood-Lead Optimists Club before the third, fourth, and fifth graders finish up the second half of the concert at 6:30 p.m. For more information call 717-3890.
Christmas Tours of the Adams House: Saturdays and Sundays Dec. 8-16
The historic home will be elegantly dressed during the Christmas season. The open house-style tour is from 12-6 p.m. on Dec 8, 9, 15, and 16. Enjoy hot beverages, cookies, and s’mores. Unique gifts will also be available for purchase in the Adams House Gift Shop. For more information or to purchase tickets call 722-4800.
Santa Bash: Dec. 8
The Lead Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting their first Lead Santa Bash from 4-8 p.m. at Lynn’s Dakotamart. Parents will be able to take their own pictures of their kids with Santa, or for a goodwill donation, a professional photographer will email photos to them. Lynn’s Dakotamart will also provide provisions for s’more’s to be cooked over open fire pits throughout the parking lot.
Community Dinner: Dec. 24
All in the Lead-Deadwood community are welcome to attend free dinner hosted by the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Christmas Eve day. Goodwill donations will be collected at the door. For more information call 584-1328.
