Leading Party Kicks Out Senator Over Sex Charge
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ President Nelson Mandela’s party today expelled a national senator who impregnated an underage girl.
Patrick Mogale, elected as an African National Congress senator in the nation’s first all-race election in April 1994, was kicked out for behaving ``in a disgraceful manner that brought the ANC into disrepute,″ said a statement from party spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa.
Mogale had sex with a minor knowing she was under the age of consent _ 16 years old _ and failed to pay support for the child he acknowledged was his, the statement said.
Mogale will lose his senate seat, and the statement said he must wait five years before reapplying for party membership.
It unclear whether he will be prosecuted.
