Dragons 20, Monarchs 17
WEMBLEY, England (AP) _ Scott Erney threw two touchdown passes to Demetrius Davis as the Barcelona Dragons upset the previously undefeated London Monarchs 20-17 Monday to clinch the final playoff spot in the World League of American Football.
The Dragons (8-2) beat out Frankfurt for the wild-card berth and will play at Birmingham next Saturday. The Monarchs (9-1) had already clinched the European Division title and will play at New York-New Jersey next Sunday.
A crowd of 50,835, London’s largest of the season, turned out at Wembley Stadium in hopes of seeing the Monarchs finish undefeated. The Monarchs averaged 40,481 for their five home games.
The Dragons victimized London’s punting game to take an early 10-0 lead.
Adrian Jones blocked a punt by Greg Horne to set up a 22-yard field goal by Massimi Manca with 4:01 left in the first quarter. On the next series, Horne shanked a punt for only 9 yards. Three plays later, Erney hit Davis with a 28- yard touchdown pass.
The Monarchs, held without a first down in the first quarter, opened the second period with a 16-play, 52-yard drive capped by Phil Alexander’s 39-yard field goal.
The Dragons made it 17-3 with 2:54 left in the third quarter when Erney connected with Davis for a 36-yard TD.
The Monarchs responded with a 6-play, 82-yard drive. A 41-yard pass from Stan Gelbaugh to Andre Riley took the ball to Barcelona’s 1 and Jeff Alexander scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 17-10.
But Alexander’s fumble set up Manca’s 20-yard field goal with 3:36 left. Gelbaugh hit Jon Horton with a 12-yard TD pass 50 seconds later, but the Dragons took the kickoff and ran out the clock.
