Man with knives fatally shot by Flagstaff police ID’ed
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Flagstaff police have identified a man fatally shot after they say he charged at an officer while wielding knives.
Authorities say 47-year-old Henry Harold Russell, of Boise, Idaho, approached two officers Sunday morning with a knife in each hand.
The officers were leaving a community mental health center on an unrelated call.
Police say Officer Tyler Romney ordered Russell to drop the knives. The commands can’t be heard on police body camera video because it has a standard 30-second audio delay once it’s activated.
Police posted a clip online, showing Russell charging at an officer.
Romney then fired his weapon, hitting Russell. That part isn’t shown on the video.
Russell was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
Police say Romney has worked for the department for three years.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
This story has been corrected to show the victim’s name is Henry Harold Russell, not Russell Henry Harold.
