WESTCONN ROUNDUP Little East Conference awards four Colonials
Four Western Connecticut State University athletes were honored by the Little East Conference for their efforts last week. From the field hockey team, Lili Dickey of Westbrook was named the Little East defensive player of the week, and Neve Manion of Newington was named the goalie of the week. Darion Richeme of Danbury was named the offensive player of the week in men’s soccer, and Carole Allers of Wilton was named the women’s tennis player of the week.
WESTFIELD, Mass. — Chauncey Allers of Wilton scored two goals and Robert Della Penna of Suffield and Matthew Restrepo of Bridgeport each scored one to lead WestConn to a 4-1 victory over Westfield State on Tuesday. The Colonials scored three unanswered goals in the second half to break a 1-1 halftime tie. Luca DiCarlo of Waterbury and Daniel Szabo of Trumbull split the game in goal for the Colonials (5-1-1), with DiCarlo making six saves in the first half and Szabo making two saves in the second half.
“It took us a little time to get in a groove tonight, but when we did, we turned a close game wide open,” WestConn coach Joe Mingachos said in a news release.
DANBURY — New Paltz swept the Colonials in three straight sets Tuesday by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-23. Nicolina Chenard of Ardsley, N.Y., led WestConn (6-6) with 10 kills, while Kamari King of East Hartford chipped in with eight kills.
“New Paltz is a regionally strong team that pushes us to improve, and we like having them on our schedule,” WestConn coach Don Ferguson said in a news release. “Overall, we played well if you disregard the second set in which we committed some costly errors. I was happy with the way we responded in the third, but the Hawks just made a few more plays to come out ahead of us.”
