Had the King of Pop not died unexpectedly in 2009, he would have turned 60 today. Michael Joseph Jackson was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary, Ind.
Nothing can top ‘Thriller’
Jackson’s 1982 album “Thriller’’ is the worldwide best-selling album of all time. It included seven top 10 singles.
A ‘royal’ couple
Jackson, who earned the moniker “The King of Pop’’ after his career flourished, was married to Lisa Marie Presley from 1994 to 1996. She is the daughter of Elvis Presley, “The King of Rock and Roll.’’
A 2-time Hall of Fame member
The Jackson 5 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Michael was inducted as a solo artist in 2001.
Once performed in Kankakee
It was the spring of 1969, and a yet-to-be widely known group known as the Jackson 5 performed at a building then called the Jones Skating Rink on North Harrison Avenue in Kankakee. The Jackson 5 included Michael and his brothers, and would soon become major hitmakers.
