Garfield Heights man dies days after fiery crash that also killed wife

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The husband of a Garfield Heights woman killed Friday in a car fire and crash in Ottawa County died Sunday morning at a Cleveland hospital.

Dennis Svihlik, 71, was pronounced dead about 3 a.m. Sunday at MetroHealth, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Jo Ann Svihlik, 65, was pronounced dead Friday at the crash scene on Ohio 2 near the Ohio 269 exit for Lakeside-Marblehead in Danbury Township.

Jo Ann Svihlik was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer west on Ohio 2 at about 4:15 p.m. Friday when the SUV began smoking and caught fire, troopers said.

Flames engulfed the SUV and Jo Ann Svihlik was not able to get out. Dennis Svihlik exited the passenger’s seat while the vehicle was still moving and fell into the road, troopers said.

He was flown by medical helicopter to MetroHealth in Cleveland, where he was treated for life-threatening injuries, troopers said.

Troopers on Sunday were not immediately able to say what led to the SUV catching fire.
