Mohave County Sheriff’s detectives are continuing an investigation into the Oct. 27 shooting death of a Kingman woman in Golden Valley. According to witness statements, however, the shooting may have been accidental.

Deputies responded to a Golden Valley home after receiving reports of a shooting, where they discovered the victim. Jessica M. Orozco, 31, was transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. During witness interviews, deputies learned that Orozco had arrived at the residence with two children, one of whom lived at the residence. Orozco attempted to enter through the front door, the report said.

The homeowner, Gerald Richardson, 57, was asleep when Orozco entered and was not expecting anyone to visit his residence, according to the report. Believing Orozco to be an intruder, he fired a single shot from a handgun at the door and struck the victim. The two children were outside the residence at the time of the shooting, and were uninjured, the report said.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the case has been forwarded to the Mohave County Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will ultimately determine whether to pursue criminal charges against Richardson.
