McAllen 2, Johnson 1 Region IV-6A semifinal McAllen shocks Jaguars in 65th minute
McAllen’s Westyn Henderson knows the history and sentiment when it comes to Rio Grande Valley girls soccer teams playing against squads from San Antonio — and neither is good.
With one dazzling display, she altered both. Henderson scored the game-winner in the 65th minute with a spectacular run that saw her elude a defender three times — twice with spin moves — as McAllen defeated Johnson 2-1 on Friday in a Region IV-6A semifinal contest at Blossom Stadium.
It was only the third postseason win by a Rio Grande Valley team against a San Antonio girls team in the UIL’s highest classification. McAllen defeated Reagan in 2007 and Mission Sharyland beat MacArthur in 2012.
“We feel like we are overlooked, and I think that is what we wanted to prove — that we were not just another Valley team and that we could compete with some of the better teams in Texas,” Henderson said. “I think that’s what we showed them today.”
Henderson’s goal came after Johnson tied it at 1-1 early in the second half on forward Khori Banks’ goal. McAllen, which plays Austin Lake Travis in Saturday’s regional final, led 1-0 at halftime when a Johnson player tried to clear a corner kick by McAllen’s Zoe Flores and accidentally redirected the ball into her own goal.
“We worked really hard — I don’t think anyone can fault us for that,” Johnson defender Rylie Kieny said. “We gave it our all.”
Region IV-5A: Dawson Brinkley and Sophia Connelly each scored goals as Alamo Heights topped Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial 2-1 at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi. The Mules advanced to the regional final for the second straight year and will play Gregory-Portland at noon Saturday for a berth to the state tournament.
Gregory-Portland outlasted defending regional champion Boerne Champion 2-1 (4-2 on penalty kicks). Gregory-Portland goalkeeper Carson Nesloney made two saves in the tiebreaker. The Wildcats led 1-0 at halftime before Champion tied it early in the second half on Erika Wilson’s goal.
Brinkley scored the game-winner early in the second half, putting in a pass from Analiese Wagner. Connelly headed in Katie Detmer’s pass in the first half to give Alamo Heights a 1-0 lead.
Region IV-4A: In McAllen, Boerne capitalized on a big first half and thumped Corpus Christi London 8-0. Boerne plays Liberty Hill at 10 a.m. Saturday in the regional final. Liberty Hill defeated Pleasanton 5-0.
