Sacred Heart soccer team tops Holy Child
The Sacred Heart Greenwich soccer team won its second straight game in convincing fashion, beating visiting Holy Child, 4-0, Monday in an FAA matchup.
The Tigers also posted a 4-0 win on Friday, blanking Kennedy Catholic.
“We came out with confidence after the win on Friday and put forth a really determined performance,” Sacred Heart coach Stuart Smith said. “We are really starting to show a balance now between offense and defense.”
Senior Erin Cleary gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Sophomore Amelia Sheehan assisted on the goal. In the 32nd minute, sophomore Leah Atkins gave Sacred Heart a 2-0 advantage, scoring off a pass from Fernanda Serna. Freshman Isabel DeVita made it 3-0, scoring off a feed from Cleary in the 42nd minute.
Cleary, finished her impressive day by scoring in the 67th minute. Taylor O’Meara was credited with the assist on the play.
Ciara Henry and Julia Spiegel combined to make three saves for the victors (2-3).
“We allowed them to have very few opportunities and we possessed the ball in the midfield very well, while creating a lot of opportunities,” Smith said. “We are starting to show a ruthless streak now. Our team is very hungry to get goals and get shutouts.”
Sacred Heart visits rival Greenwich Academy Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a key FAA game.
