Billings man suspected of killing wife dies in jail
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A Billings man arrested on suspicion of killing his wife before staging a car wreck has been found dead in his jail cell in Billings of a suspected suicide, Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder said Friday.
Linder tells KULR-TV that a detention officer making routine security checks found Daniel Scheihing, 70, unconscious in his cell. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. His death appears to be a suicide, Linder said. Yellowstone County officers are investigating.
Scheihing was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of deliberate homicide and tampering with evidence in the death of Celia Scheihing, 72. Her body was found in the crashed vehicle Tuesday near Billings, Coroner Rich Hoffman said.
An autopsy determined she was already dead when the SUV crashed into a power pole and that she likely died earlier Tuesday, police Lt. Brandon Wooley said in a statement.
