Fairfield U Glee Club will sing into spring at Greenwich church

March 21, 2018 GMT

GREENWICH — With the latest blast of snow and cold, it doesn’t exactly feel like spring. But St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside is hoping to hit the right notes and welcome a new season with its Spring Into Music concert.

The concert will be at 8 p.m. Saturday with the Fairfield University Glee Club. The night will include performances from the club’s all-male a cappella group The Bensonians and the all-female chamber group Sweet Harmony. The Fairfield University Chamber Singers are slated to take the stage as well.

“They do a fabulous concert,” said Carol Ducret, a member of the women’s guild at the church. “It’s quite an enjoyable evening. They have a fabulous repertoire of songs, and they change up the concert every year. It’s great, and it’s a real legacy event for this church.”

The glee club has performed many times at the church — coming to St. Catherine’s for more than 30 years, especially for spring concerts. The concert remains a special one for the church community because it is in memory of the Rev. Vincent J. O’Conner, a former pastor who first brought in the glee club.

O’Connor passed away 15 years ago, but Ducret said the church has continued the concert as a tribute to his legacy and because the community especially enjoys the performances.

“Everyone seems to love it,” Ducret said. “Anyone who comes to listen to the music wants to come back for repeat performances. We’re very lucky to have them come to St. Catherine’s.”

The church puts out the welcome mat for the college students in the glee club. Dinner and desserts are dished up for the performers. The singers look forward to the concert as much as the audience members, she said.

With roots going back to its founding in 1947, the glee club is the oldest club on Fairfield University’s campus. According to the university, the club will open the evening with classic songs such as “Viva La Musical” and “A New Song.” After that, the concert will continue with “The Ground” from Sunrise Mass, “Gloria in Excelsis” from Missa Carolae and “We Will Sing of a Dream.”

The Chamber Singers will perform “Cantar,” “Abendlied,” “Ave Maria,” and “Turn the Beat Around.” The concert will be conducted by Carole Ann Maxwell.

Tickets can be purchased at the church’s rectory as well as at the Packages Plus in Cos Cob and at Bennett Jewelers in Old Greenwich. The price in advance is $12, or $15 at the door on the night of the concert.
